Book Review: Immortal by Sue Lynn Tan

ImmortalImmortal by Sue Lynn Tan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

My first review in a long time...god I miss doing them.

I read Immortal by Sue Lynn Tan and I enjoyed myself. I liked Liyen and how headstrong she was, trying to make sure the choices she made for her kingdom of Tianxia were the perfect choices for it-which means that she's not gonna bow down to the Queen and get her blessing. She wants the Shield of Rocks and Sand I believe so they can take down the barrier so they can live in peace and not locked up in a shield and not being able to go out to the world, to see it and see what is out there. While she was trying to do that, that's when she met the God of War, Zhangwei, whom she hates immediately because he burned her home down and also possibly killed her beloved grandfather, which was terrible, but there was a reason why.

Her grandfather gave her the Divine Lotus Flower because she was poisoned by the Wangchuan Waters, and he gave it to her instead of Queen Caihong, so she could heal and live. When the God of War comes and tries to get her to fall in love with him so he can get the Divine Lotus, she starts to fall for it...only for her to learn that it was all a trick to get her to relinquish the flower, and he tries to get it from her by stabbing her.

Liyen gets mad and goes back to Tianxia, where she tries to navigate the court without the blessing of Queen Caihong when the darker forces attack and she's in their clutches. She meets Lord Dalian and learns a secret: her Aunt Shou is one of them. Lord Dalian wants revenge on Queen Caihong for what happened to their people and how his sister died. But the more Liyen learns about the past and what happened, even going to the Temple of the Crimson Moon to learn about her past. When she rejects both destines and rewrites her own, that's when she gets the memories of the time she was immortal and remembers the love she shared and loved with the God of War, Zhangwei.

The ending was slow, but at the same time, I enjoyed myself reading it. I was close to crying when I read the ending, and I didn't want this story to end. I wanted to know what happened to Liyen and Zhangwei, though it did also turn out funny when he came back when she summoned him and said that she's gonna marry him in front of the whole entire court, and she was trying not to laugh (but I laughed because that whole thing was funny.) I enjoyed this book and now I wanna read all of Sue Lynn Tan's works :)

Book Review: Heart of the Sun Warrior by Sue Lynn Tan

Heart of the Sun Warrior (The Celestial Kingdom Duology, #2)Heart of the Sun Warrior by Sue Lynn Tan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A beautiful ending to a beautiful duology. Heart of the Sun Warrior not only hurt my feelings and my soul, but it brought this lovely series to a close. I read Daughter of the Moon Goddess at the beginning of the year, to remind myself what happened before getting to the book, and I wasn't disappointed at all with this book. It broke my heart, made me cry a little bit (in a good way!) and it also shocked me, because it had a love triangle, and I thought she was going to choose the first one, but after she realized who she really loved, that's when she wanted the other one...until he died.

Now Liwei...I thought he was going to be it. He was handsome, the Crown Prince, and pretty much did everything to help her without asking, but she couldn't picture herself sitting there on the throne next to him as the Celestial Empress, fighting for power and trying to be the best Empress she can be. She didn't want to hurt Liwei like that, so she chose Wenzhi, who I really didn't like at all at first, even in the first book, he started to look funny, making me giving him a side-eye. So I wasn't a huge fan of him at first. But in this book, I hated him in the beginning like I thought, but then he started to look appealing as he too started doing things for Xingyin and making sure she's alright, that she, after everything that happened between them, she realized that she loved him.

The small romance of Houyi and Chang'e was so cute. I was gushing when they got back together and he apologized for leaving her and even getting mad at her for taking the elixr. When he protects her it is so cute, even giving her a rabbit because she thought she was lonely awe :) Houyi was so cute and adorable, and seeing Chang'e happy when she got her husband back was so cute.

But everything else hurt my soul. I cried, and gasped, hating Wugong altogether and wished that he was dead, even going so far as to taking the throne and imprisioning the Celestial Emperor. I cannot believe that even the Celestial Empress got into the fight, but she died, which was sad, but at least she died a hero. But I'm also mad at the Celestal Empress who gave Xingyin that ultimatum when they met up. I still a little upset that she kept it, but then once it was broken, I also kinda wish that Xingyin got with Liwei, even though she carried on with the pact with his mama, but even though she chose Wenzhi in the end, I'm glad that they are still friends after all of this.

I really did enjoy this book and I would read this duology all over again.

Book Review: Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan

Daughter of the Moon Goddess (The Celestial Kingdom Duology, #1)Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Just like Legendborn and Iron Widow, this book right here has soared into the top five books I love this year-and it’s only the second month of the year. Sue Lynn Tan has written a wonderful world full of gods, goddesses, demons and love. It is inspired by the legend of the Moon Goddess Chang’e, and it is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever read in a long time.

The story is about the title character, Xingyin, the daughter of the moon goddess. She is trying to free her mother from her enchantment that was placed on her, as punishment for drinking an elixir. One day, she left her home because of a visit from the Celestial Empress and the fact that she sensed someone at the home. Leaving her home was painful, but she had to do it as she left to escape the Celestial Goddess to go to another kingdom so she can live a better life.

That better life starts out by serving a very horrid girl. She had to lie about her family as she worked, and it was one of those days where she met Crown Prince Liwei. The two talked a bit, and then (I honestly forgot the name of the girl Xingyin served honestly, she was trash) and then invited the both of them to a contest. Xingyin won the contest, and she and Liwei are together a lot-training, going to school…falling in love.

But Xingyin doesn’t want that, even after she finds out Liwei is going to get engaged to another royal. She joins the Celestial Army and is right next to a man named General Wenzhi. The both of them go on adventures and encounter monsters like the bone devil and the Governor Ruyi when she is finally rewarded with what she craves: a seal and a wish for whatever she wants. She reveals herself as the daughter of the moon goddess, and everyone is up in an uproar about it. Even though it was just a simple wish, and she had to hide it for reasons, the Celestial Emperor came up with a task for her: get the pearls from the dragons.

And she does, only to learn that the Celestial Emperor once controlled the four great dragons. So Xingyin comes up with an idea: she’s going to return the dragon’s essence to them. She does so, and then danger strikes when she’s kidnapped by Wenzhi-and is revealed that he’s a demon prince and he had feelings for her (shocking-and this happened before she released the dragon’s essence to them). Thanks to his younger brother, Xingyin escaped the Demon World and went back to the Celestial Kingdom, where she gave the pearls back to the Emperor (who was fucking furious) and learned that Liwei broke the bethrothal to his betrothed, because he was in love with her.

This book was so good and I think EVERYONE should read it. It was slow at first, but then it ramped up, and I loved every bit of it.
